The terrifying sex trafficking underworld is one of the world’s worst fears and largest open wounds. News reports have us looking over our shoulders in every parking lot and public restroom and keeping our kids on leashes (sometimes literally) when out and about in an effort to stay safe. We have become accustomed to constantly being on the defense to thwart potential threats, but in some cases, it can backfire a bit. One woman has recently opened up about her experience with a major misunderstanding involving human trafficking.

Alexa Wainscott. According to her story on Quora.com, 25-year-old Alexa Wainscott had quite an unusual (and scary) encounter with an individual who believed she was being trafficked. The law student experienced a bizarre and terrifying night out that ended in insults and stalking by another patron.
Her Story. “About a month ago, my fiancé and I attended the 30th birthday party of one of my law school friends at a downtown bar. The same evening, my parents attended a 50th birthday party for a friend at the casino, which is also downtown,” Alexa explained.

A Night on the Town. Alexa explained that the evening began to wind down and her friends were dissipating from the bar gathering. Since they had been dressed up and in the area already, Alexa and her fiancé decided to meet up with her parents at the nearby casino.

Their Arrival. “We arrived at the casino, met my parents, and headed toward the bar area to listen to the live music and grab a drink. We sat at a high-top table for four, and my fiancé went to the bar to secure some drinks for us. Shortly after, he returned with our customary libations - a vodka soda for him, and a gin and tonic for me,” Alexa said.
Decoding the Drinks. At this point in the evening, Alexa says her fiancé returned with the drinks and realized the bartender hadn’t noted which drink was which. After sampling the drink, Alexa says she made a disgusted face due to a long-standing hatred of vodka and sampling the wrong drink.

The Wrong Drink. “The busy bartender had forgotten to garnish the drinks, so we had to guess at which was which. After a sip, we realized we had grabbed the wrong ones and immediately switched back. But, not before I made a hideous face - I hate the taste of vodka (I blame college),” she said.

The Approach. According to Alexa, it was shortly after the drink mix-up that an extremely intoxicated woman decided to approach her at the table. The woman had been watching Alexa and became convinced she was being trafficked and that she had to intervene to stop it.
“We’ll Help You.” “Not even five minutes later, and before I’d even gotten to try my gin and tonic, an extremely intoxicated young woman appeared beside me. She grabs my arm and whispers in my ear: ‘I can tell you don’t want to be here, come with me, we’ll help you get out,’” writes Alexa.

Confusing Moment. For a moment, Alexa says she was truly confused and had no idea what the woman was talking about. It didn’t take long before she realized the woman believed Alexa’s father was trying to kidnap her for a sex trafficking sting.

That’s My DAD. “I dumbly responded with a ‘what, huh?’ And she replied, ‘Are you being held against your will here?’ with an icy stare across the table at my dad. I sort of put two and two together, at least that she didn’t realize this was my father. Again, ever-eloquent after a couple drinks at our previous party, I was just like, ‘That’s my dad…’” she said.
Wouldn’t Believe Her. Despite repeatedly explaining to the woman that Alexa was there with her parents and her fiancé, and that she was not, in fact, being trafficked (by her father or anyone), the woman continued to refuse to believe her. The stranger was convinced that Alexa was being brainwashed into believing this wasn’t really happening and she was convinced she was going to save her.

The Drink. “She was convinced that my family was not, in fact, my family, and that this was a scheme to drug and kidnap me. Her evidence? She had been watching me since I arrived and saw me make a disgusted face upon tasting my drink. She simply knew that my drink had been drugged as a result,” explained Alexa.

Her Significant Other. During the unpleasant conversation, the woman’s significant other approached the table and only made things worse by making excuses for her. He explained that she had been watching several television shows about human trafficking and had become convinced Alexa was a victim.
Asking Them to Leave. Alexa explained that her mother requested the woman leave, but rather than comply, the drunk couple proceeded to follow Alexa and her family out of the casino. To make things worse, the drunk couple were joined by several other “buff” friends who also followed Alexa and family out of the establishment.
Uncomfortable Encounter. “It was an uncomfortable and certainly awkward encounter, to say the least. And, as a side note, if this woman had really paid any attention to these human trafficking documentaries she had supposedly been watching, she would have realized that approaching the ‘victim’ alone and without informing security is quite the opposite of the recommended course of action,” Alexa said.
