Study. A study was done at the University of Albany and lead by Professor Gordon Gallup, which discovered that women who don’t use condoms during intercourse are less depressed than those who do. Interestingly enough, it’s thought that semen absorption in the vagina is to blame.

Research. According to livetheorganicdream.com, this study used about 300 all female participants, who were given questionnaires to fill out which consisted of questions about their sex lives. They had to answer things like how often they had sex, for how long, and if they used condoms or not. Then using a Beck Depression Inventory, or BDI, the researchers rated their depression levels.

No condoms. According to the researchers, “females who engaged in sexual intercourse but never used condoms exhibited significantly lower scores on the BDI than those who usually or always used condoms,” reports livetheorganicdream.com. Essentially, they discovered that not using a condom during sex has a significant effect on a woman’s mood.

Other factors. The researchers took into consideration other factors, like whether or not a woman was on birth control or any other type of contraceptive, or if she was in a relationship. Even still, condoms seemed to be the only thing that really affected a woman’s mood.

Semen. Researchers think that when semen gets absorbed through the vagina, it makes a woman feel less depressed. And the researchers acknowledged that despite these findings, they don’t under any circumstances condone having unprotected sex.
Protection. “Regardless of the findings, this study does not advocate that people abstain from using condoms. Protecting oneself from an unwanted pregnancy or a sexually transmitted disease is far more important,” said Gallup, as reported by livetheorganicdream.com.

Others. While this study provided some interesting results, the researchers noted that they would need to do more research in order to find a direct correlation. But speaking of sex and depression, another study found that women who frequently engage in oral sex have better mental health.

Survey. Researchers at The State University of New York did a study with almost 300 women in order to see how sex impacted their mental health. Unsurprisingly, women who participated in oral sex were much happier than those who didn’t.

Chemical. This study also proved that semen contained certain chemicals that could help improve a woman’s mood while simultaneously improving their sleep and feelings of affection, reports Consumer Health Digest. According to the researchers, semen contains cortisol, melatonin, and other chemicals.

Depression. Interestingly enough, women who didn’t have oral sex as frequently were more likely to be as depressed as the women who abstained from sex. “The study went on to state, that it was not just the physical intimacy of the sexual act, but also the amount of semen in their bodies that caused sexually active women to be happier,” reports Consumer Health Digest.

Treatment. So while semen might be able to help with depression, it probably won’t cure it. In reality, there is not really a "cure" for depression. It's something that you learn to live with. There are many ways a therapist can help you deal with your negative thoughts. And if these treatments aren’t enough for you, there are other things you can do to balance out your moods yourself.

Getting sun. Believe it or not, spending a little bit of time outside could put you in a significantly better mood. Whether it be taking a brisk walk, going for a job, or simply staring at the birds, try to make an effort to be outside even for just a few minutes a day.

Be social. Although it might be the last thing that you wanna do, try spending more time with your friends, and being social. Being with people will help you get out of your dark cloud, even if it’s just for an hour. Physical exercise can always help to distract your mind and get your body moving.

Get help. Remember, if depression is something you’re going though, it’s important to get help right away. You can’t fight it alone, so talking to someone always works too. Even when things feel most futile, you have to teach yourself that you have agency over your life and your decisions. The negativity does not control you.
